The gender pay gap has long been a fight for equality with women. Recent studies have found that women earned about 82 cents for every dollar men make in their jobs. The gap stretches even wider for Black women, earning about 70 percent of what white men make.

Today, initiatives, like Hire Black Now, are building communities and raising awareness to help Black people find jobs with livable wages. It’s founder, Niani Tolbert, says there are high-paying industries that Black women aren’t taking space in, but should be.

“A lot of it comes from not advocating for ourselves because we don’t want to seem like the angry Black woman or ungrateful,” Tolbert told 21Ninety.

Here are the jobs she suggests considering to bring in at least $100,000 annually.

    Technology Sales

Tolbert encourages Black women to look into jobs within the technology sales industry. She asserts that those positions see little turnover because it is simply about bringing in money.

“Revenue-generating roles are the most stable and the last to go because they make the company money,” Tolbert said. “Companies are always thinking about their bottom line.”

Technology sales specifically focusing on cloud services are in huge demand since digital storage is a huge component of modern-day technology. She says having prior sales experience is great for this role. You can also look into sales boot camps that will help you find work after completion of the program.

    AI Ethics

Artificial intelligence, commonly known as AI, is an evolving technology that continues to show up in everyday life. This role requires creating principles that will enforce the responsible usage of AI.

“These are the people that are making decisions of the future of our society and the future of technology,” Tolbert said. “I just want Black women in those seats. We need representation.”

This industry is a bit harder to get into, according to Tolbert. It helps to have skills in law, machine learning, programming and software development. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion roles can also lead to jobs in AI ethics.

    Data Compliance

A career in data compliance is another industry that Tolbert doesn’t see slowing down. As technology continues to grow, so will the need to regulate it. People who work in compliance perform audits for companies to make sure employees are aware of and practicing new and prior regulations.

“Those jobs are steady because we are always going to be catching up with technology,” Tolbert said.

    Intellectual Property Attorney

Tolbert says this job is the legal world’s best kept secret. Intellectual property lawyers work with logos, inventions, artistic works, trademarks and other assets that a business owns the rights to.

“[Intellectual property] lawyers will always have money because there is always going to be an update,” Tolbert said. “There is an ending time to those things. There [are] regulations to those things.”

Intellectual property does not only apply to major companies, like Disney and the National Football League. These types of lawyers can also advise small businesses on intellectual property rights.

    Anesthesiologist

“If you are considering going into the healthcare industry, consider anesthesiology,” Tolbert said. “That is the only industry that has been growing since the pandemic.”

Anesthesiologists are doctors who specialize in pain care before during and after medical procedures and surgeries. Tolbert says this is another job that is routinely needed.
