Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) had a rough showing at his first solo rally since being named former President Donald Trump’s running mate, even in his own hometown. Morning Joe ‘s co-hosts were not about to let him forget it.

As they played a clip of Vance’s “Mountain Dew/racist” “joke” from Monday’s rally, Joe Scarborough channeled another past Republican presidential candidate with the classic sad chestnut: “Please clap.”

Vance: Weirdest thing to me: Democrats say that it is racist to believe… Well, they say it’s racist to do anything. I had a Diet Mountain Dew yesterday and one today. I’m sure they’re going to call that racist too, but… It’s good. I love you guys.

Scarborough: Please clap. Please, please clap. Please?

Mika Brzezinski : What happened there?

    Scarborough: I don’t know, but…

Brzezinski: Never mind. It doesn’t matter.

They started trying to compare Vance to Rich Little , but settled on Henny Youngman , with Mike Barnicle chiming in: “Take my Mountain Dew — please!”

In Jeb Bush’s defense, he was being a bit self-deprecating during his “Please clap” moment.

Scarborough then suggested: “Maybe he should just read the script.” Brzezinski then did just that, pointing out that Vance’s chilly reception was in his own home state — in his own hometown of Middletown, Ohio — and that he went on to accuse Vice President Kamala Harris of “not sounding grateful enough to be in America.”
