The Dallas Cowboys Should Move On From This Player in 2025

The Dallas Cowboys are facing some serious contract within the next year. Between Micah Parsons, CeeDee Lamb, and Dak Prescott, keeping their group of stars together doesn’t seem likely. With reports that they’re prioritizing CeeDee Lamb over Prescott right now, they’re already on the right track. 2025 will be a big year for Jerry Jones' franchise. Who should the Cowboys lock up first, and who should they move on from?

    Micah Parsons

Parsons has been the centerpiece of the Dallas defense. In 3 years, he's recorded 40.5 sacks, 13 in his rookie year, setting a franchise record. In that time, he also has over 200 tackles, 7 forced fumbles, and a defensive touchdown. Luckily for the team, he’s playing on the final year of his rookie deal, and the Cowboys have already picked up his fifth-year option. The Cowboys can kick this can down the road, but his 2025 salary will see a significant jump. The star defender will undoubtedly cost a lot of money, but the Cowboys have some time to get their bearings before then. Locking up Parsons is a no-brainer, and losing him could mean losing their entire identity on defense.

    CeeDee Lamb

The 2020 first-rounder has certainly lived up to expectations in Dallas. Lamb has been the MVP of the Cowboys’ offense for the last few years, and he should be retained. While his success could depend on Prescott’s play, he’s proven he deserves the money he wants. Lamb set Cowboys franchise records in 2023 for both receptions and receiving yards in a season. He set NFL league records in 2023 as well. With reports that CeeDee Lamb might hold out during training camp, getting this deal done could be an immediate priority if Dallas wants to keep their #1 weapon.

    Dak Prescott

If the Cowboys cannot retain all 3 stars, letting go of Prescott makes the most sense. This has less to do with Prescott’s talent and more to do with Dallas’ situation. They still have Trey Lance under a rookie contract, and Cooper Rush on the roster. Rush has a 5-1 record when starting for the Cowboys, and Lance hasn’t had much opportunity to succeed or fail. Dak Prescott is still a great quarterback, but his time in Dallas hasn’t gone the way he, or Jerry Jones, wanted. With a 2-5 playoff record since being drafted, it's evident that the team isn’t winning with him, and overpaying him won’t change that. A change of scenery could be good for him, and a fresh start could benefit the Cowboys. Change isn’t always preferred, but it could be necessary.
