A listeria outbreak linked to meats sliced at deli counters has killed two people and sickened 28 more in 12 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced July 19.

Of 18 affected people interviewed, 16 reported eating meats sliced at a deli, most commonly deli-sliced turkey, liverwurst and ham.

The CDC does not have information to show that people are getting sick from prepackaged deli meats.

Investigators have not yet determined the source of the outbreak.

New York has most recorded cases

New York has recorded seven cases — the most of any state.

Overall, the true number of sick people is likely higher than the number reported because some people recover without medical care and are not tested for listeria.

    What is listeria?

Listeria is a genus of bacteria that causes severe illness when it spreads from the gut to other parts of the body.

The deaths occurred in Illinois and New Jersey, the CDC said. Maryland had six cases, while Missouri, Virginia, Georgia and Massachusetts each had two cases. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Pennsylvania and North Carolina each had one case reported.

    What are listeria symptoms?

Symptoms of a listeria infection include headaches, neck stiffness, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, fever and muscle aches. Typically, they start one to four weeks after eating contaminated food but also can start as early as the same day or up to 70 days after exposure.

Listeria is especially dangerous to women who are pregnant, people 65 and older and those with weakened immune systems. The CDC says people in those categories should not eat meat sliced at any deli counter unless it is reheated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Anyone experiencing symptoms should call their doctor.
