Lady Gaga stars as a musical, murderous Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix ’s Joker in the new trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux . Watch it below.

Serving as a sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 origin film , Joker: Folie à Deux begins where Joker left off — with Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) in Arkham State Hospital imprisoned for the murder of talk show host Murray Franklin.

The new trailer follows Joker: Folie à Deux ’ s first teaser trailer , which arrived back in May and confirmed the film’s “jukebox musical” style. One of our most anticipated movies of 2024 , the film’s official logline reads, “After murdering Murray Franklin live on television, Arthur Fleck is incarcerated in Arkham State Hospital, where he meets Harleen Quinzel. The two fall madly in love and experience musical madness through their shared delusions, while Fleck’s followers start a movement to free him from Arkham, ultimately giving rise to the Clown Prince of Crime’s criminal empire.”

Though Phillips’ 2019 film was intended to be a standalone work, Joker: Folie à Deux was officially confirmed in 2022. Phillips returns to direct, and wrote the screenplay with original Joker scribe Scott Silver. In addition to Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, Joker: Folie à Deux also stars Zazie Beets (reprising her role as Sophie Dumond), Brendan Gleeson, Katherine Keener, Steve Coogan, and more.

The film’s title gets its name from a psychological condition called Folie à Deux, or shared psychosis, where delusional beliefs are shared among a pair of individuals. To make things even more theatrical, Lady Gaga reportedly asked to be called a different name on the set of Joker: Folie à Deux to help her stay in character.

Joker: Folie à Deux will waltz into theaters on October 4th.
