The hot topic – and big movers – in automotive in recent years is the Sports Utility Vehicle – the SUV. In some countries, SUVs are taking up to half the market share in passenger vehicles due to their durability, power for their size, and creature comforts found within. Looking at the SUV landscape, each country has their own preferences when it comes to SUV brands and makes – so what are the most popular SUVs around the world? Let’s take a look at the most popular brands in different markets.

SUVs in the United States

The land of the SUV has been conquered by the marque of the rising sun – the Toyota RAV4 is the most popular SUV model of 2024 so far, selling almost 250,000 units to date. It’s rugged, has great interior space, and all the bells and whistles a modern SUV should have. This is followed by the Tesla Model Y – a surprising high entry given it’s an all-electric model – the Honda CR-V, the Nissan Rogue, and the Chevrolet Equinox which prizes security tech as much as it does passenger comfort.

SUVs in Australia

For those not in the know, Australia is a huge country – 7.7 million kilometres (4.78 million miles) huge. Anything that isn’t big or tough doesn’t make the cut, which accounts for why SUVs in Australia are so popular. Unsurprisingly, the most popular SUV in Australia is the Toyota RAV4, topping the sales chart as of June 2024 – and the rest of the list falls more or less in line with the US. That’s followed by the Mitsubishi Outlander, which also comes in a hybrid variant, the Tesla Model Y, then the Mazda CX-5 and luxurious for the price Ford Everest.

SUVs in the United Kingdom

Taste in SUVs across the pond and in the antipodes couldn’t be in starker contrast, with the highest selling SUV in Blighty being the sturdy yet reliable Kia Sportage, which also came in as the 2 ^nd highest selling passenger vehicle in the UK overall. It’s followed by 2022’s best seller the Nissan Qashqai, it’s smaller brother the Nissan Juke, and down the list, the MG HS and the Hyundai Tucson. Many of these cars are still petrol/diesel variants, despite the UK government attempting to phase out these types of vehicles by 2035.

SUVs in Europe

SUV fever has also hit Europe in a big way, with more than half of new car sales being from that category. The Tesla Model Y was the biggest hit in the first half of 2023, a 207% increase in sales compared to last year. Coming in behind the Y was the Volkswagen T-Roc, the Toyota Yaris Cross, VW Tiguan, and the Dacia Duster, a Romanian brand known for their cheap prices, dominating chassis, and squeezing out as much value for money in their cars as possible.

With so many SUVs dominating the top spots, its possible that this category will be a mainstay in buyer’s eyes for many years to come.
