Joe Biden is out of the presidential race. Here's what that means for Georgia ballots

President Joe Biden confirmed on Sunday that he will no longer seek a second term. While this is a major development for the nation, Georgia's election processes are unlikely to be affected.

While Biden was the presumed Democratic nomination, that nomination was never going to be official until it's decided at the Democratic National Convention in August. The same can be said for whether or not Vice President Kamala Harris will be the new Democratic nominee following Biden's drop out.

Augusta-Richmond County Board of Elections Executive Director Travis Doss said via email that ballots for the Nov. 5 General Election have not been proofed or printed. The Secretary of State’s office produces the ballots statewide and then forwards them to the individual counties for proofing and approval. Richmond County is not scheduled to received ballot proofs until the end of August or Sept. 1.

Charlotte Sosebee, the director of elections and voter registration for Athens-Clarke County, said something similar via email: "Per the SOS Office, this does not impact election administration and ballot building timelines in Georgia. The Democratic Party will formally let us know of their candidates for president and vice president after their convention, just as normal. Our ballots will be built in late August and early September."

The Secretary of State's office did not provide a comment as of Tuesday morning.

Biden won Georgia’s Democratic primary on March 19 by about 95% of the vote. However, Georgia's 108 delegates were never required to support Biden at the DNC due to the convention's "good conscience" clause.

Georgians have until Oct. 7 to register for the election . For more information on registering, go to sos.ga.gov . If you need info on your voting status and precincts, go to mvp.sos.ga.gov/s/ .
