‘My first and last name are really bad together and I don’t know what to do’

A teenager has taken to social media with concerns about her first name and surname , which she says do not go well together.

Uploading to Reddit , she gave viewers some context about why she wasn’t a fan of her name.

She wrote: “Hi. I’m a 16-year-old girl, and my name is Marilyn. I don’t think that’s a very bad name itself. I don’t like it that much but I don’t hate it.

“My last name is Manson.

“No I’m not joking. I live a very sheltered lifestyle (homeschooled, no real friends or anything. I leave the house like twice a week to go to the store) and have very old parents.”

The musical artist Marilyn Manson has been controversial in the past as the media blamed Manson for influencing the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre.

The young girl explained of her name: “I was NOT NAMED AFTER THE PERSON. My parents liked the name Marilyn and said it would be fine to use with my last name because ‘nobody knows who Marilyn Manson is unless they’re into weird stuff.’ NOPE. EVERY TIME my full name gets brought up I get weird looks, jokes about it, questions if that’s actually my real name, ‘do your parents hate you?’ All of it. “Is your sisters named Twiggy?” NO. her name is Elizabeth and you aren’t being funny or original by making that joke.”

The young woman further shared that she doesn’t have a middle name to lean on.

She said: “I don’t have a good middle name to go by. My middle name is Latxa (my mom is Laotian) so I’m just really f—--- sick of having such a dumb name. And despite dealing with the ‘consequences’ of the name my whole life my parents STILL don’t see an issue with it because 1) ‘Marilyn is a pretty name’ and 2) ‘you’re just hanging around the wrong people.’”

Looking for a solution she asked: “Is there anything I can do? I’m gonna change my name when I’m 18 but that can’t come soon enough.”

One social media user suggested: “Mari, Ari, or Lyn?”

Another individual chimed in: “Change your last name! Go by Marilyn Latxa!”

An additional Redditor said: “Maybe you could try another name that starts with M, like Marlo? Just to tide you over until you can get your legal change. I also want to wish you luck with that. I changed my name at eighteen and it was genuinely the best thing I ever done.”

Someone else said: “No advice just solidarity. You are not crazy or unreasonable. Your parents are.”

And another person chimed in: “My goodness, my condolences. I don’t know how to pronounce Latxa, but it sounds like you don’t want to use that anyway. When you plan on changing your name, which part do you intend to keep? Have you tried introducing yourself as Mary?”
