WASHINGTONVILLE, MONTOUR COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Montour-Delong Community Fair is providing not just family fun, but also giving farmers and craftsmen an outlet to showcase their work.

Closed-up tents and puddles left from Monday night’s rain remain at the Montour-Delong Community Fairgrounds ahead of day 2.

Work to prepare for the crowds starts early for some, like Isabella Mensinger of Roaring Creek 4H Club.

“We usually get up around seven and wash our animals and then we make sure they have feed, hay, water, along with a clean bedding.”

Mensinger and her dairy cow ‘Lite’ are part of the Roaring Creek 4H Club. She, along with others, raises and trains livestock for production.

Taylor Frey of Roaring Creek 4H Club, says, “We put a lot of hard work into getting them trained to walk with us, to set up and be able to use the show stick and show halter. We have to keep them clean for the show because they can’t be dirty.”

For some, it’s all they’ve known.

Courtney Shuman, a Junior Fair Board says, “I was raised on a dairy farm and my parents both showed and so it was kind of just a family thing to continue.”

The week-long fair gives the public a chance to learn about the hard work that goes into a farm and local agriculture.

Junior Fair Board member Joanna Esenwein, says, “We get questions when we are clipping animals, when we’re feeding animals… They’re really curious as to how the every day goes with us here, at home, and it’s really a lot of fun to educate them on everything as well.”

The Roaring Creek 4H Club isn’t only about livestock, it also focuses on teaching life skills in all areas.

Robin Oderdorf, Educator from Montour County 4H says, “Public speaking, healthy living, exercise. They learn about environmental science, we do a lot of entomology in our county.”

But the fair has something for everyone, even if it’s just reuniting with the community.

Abe Wolfe, a Junior Fair Board says, “It’s like family you only get to see every year at reunions, but we see each other more than that, but every time it’s a great time. Every time you get to see everybody in one place, you know you can’t go wrong.”

The Montour-Delong Community Fair runs every day this week through Saturday, July 27 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
