Olympic legend Charlotte Dujardin has withdrawn from the upcoming Games in Paris after a video surfaced showing her "making an error of judgement".

The six-time British dressage medalist is currently under investigation by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) and has decided to "withdraw from all competition while this process takes place". Dujardin confirmed she is also under scrutiny from the British Equestrian Federation and British Dressage.

In a statement, she said: "A video has emerged from four years ago which shows me making an error of judgement during a coaching session. Understandably, the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) is investigating and I have made the decision to withdraw from all competition including the Paris Olympics while this process takes place.

"What happened was completely out of character and does not reflect how I train my horses or coach my pupils, however there is no excuse. I am deeply ashamed and should have set a better example in that moment. I am sincerely sorry for my actions and devastated that I have let everyone down, including Team GB, fans and sponsors.

"I will cooperate fully with the FEI, British Equestrian Federation and British Dressage during their investigations, and will not be commenting further until the process is complete."

In the 2012 London Games, Dujardin achieved an impressive feat by winning both the team and individual gold medals on her horse Valegro. The dynamic duo then managed to clinch individual gold and team silver in Rio de Janeiro, four years later.

Riding aboard a new horse, Gio at the Tokyo Olympics, she added two more bronze medals to her tally.

In the upcoming individual dressage and team event, Dujardin had set sight on making history with her new horse Imhotep. Aiming to surpass Dame Laura Kenny, the now-retired cyclist, Dujardin needed one more medal of any shade to become Britain's most-decorated female Olympian.

Just days earlier, she had pondered what such an achievement would mean, saying: "It will be one of the most incredible moments if that does happen. But I don't put any pressure on myself to make that happen."
