The rising co st of liv ing has become evident in recent years, leaving some Americans in financial distress. How hard does Ohio have it?
Personal finance site WalletHub released its findings on the states with the most people in financial distress. Ohio ranked in the top 30 states, according to the data.
WalletHub considered factors like average credit score, search interest around the terms "debt" and "loans," the share of people with accounts in distress, as well as the change in the number of bankruptcy filings from March 2023 to March 2024. Financial distress, as the site defines it, is "having a credit account that is in forbearance or has its payments deferred," due to financial difficulty.
Here's where Ohio ranks among states with people in financial distress.
Where does Ohio rank among financially distressed states?
WalletHub ranked Ohio No. 27 out of 50 states for people experiencing financial distress.
While the Buckeye State lands in the middle of the pack, the state is still feeling the pinch with three Ohio cities that have some of the largest rent increases in the U.S . WalletHub also notes that Ohio had one of the highest changes in credit score from March 2023 to March 2024.
Where do the rest of the stakes rank?
Michigan and Texas took the top spots for the most financially distressed people in the country, according to WalletHub.
Kentucky and West Virginia ranked in the top 20. Indiana was one spot behind Ohio at No. 28.
