WalletHub considered factors like average credit score, search interest around the terms "debt" and "loans," the share of people with accounts in distress, as well as the change in the number of bankruptcy filings from March 2023 to March 2024. Financial distress, as the site defines it, is "having a credit account that is in forbearance or has its payments deferred," due to financial difficulty.
