Keanu Reeves has been making movies (and headlines) for four decades, but when the 59-year-old actor looks back on his career, it seems there's one experience that stands out as particularly memorable.

In a July 22nd appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert , Reeves shared his "fondest memories" from some of his most successful films over the years. For Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure , Reeves cited "friendship and acting with Alex Winter ," while his standout memories from Point Break included "the genius of Kathryn Bigelow and the beauty and professional and awesome Patrick Swayze ." When Colbert brought up The Matrix (which turns 25 this year), Reeves paused, appearing to get choked up, before sharing his thoughts on the blockbuster.

" The Matrix changed my life, and then over these years, it's changed so many other people's lives in really positive and great ways," said Reeves.

"And so, as an artist to be...you hope for that when you, when you get to do the film or tell a story...and the amount of people that I've met who have said to me and been touched by The Matrix and in such a positive way, it's the best."

Reeves is currently promoting his new novel, "The Book of Elsewhere," which was  written with British science fiction author China Miéville and is based on Reeves' "BRZRKR" comic book series (currently slated for a live-action Netflix film adaptation, starring Reeves).

He recently opened up to BBC News about the book's themes, which include love and mortality.

"I'm 59, so I'm thinking about death all the time," he said.

"Hopefully it's not crippling, but hopefully it's sensitized [us] to an appreciation of the breath we have, and the relationships that we have the potential to have."

"Maybe ultimately the fantasy of building another world brings some kind of comfort in some way," he added.
