Democrats praise Biden and Harris, slam Project 2025 during news conference

(The Center Square) – House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar and Vice Chair Ted Lieu slammed former President Donald Trump and praised President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris during a news conference at Capitol Hill on Tuesday after their weekly caucus meeting.

Aguilar praised Biden at the start of the conference.

“President Biden served as the beacon of hope throughout the world to ensure that we put patriotism first,” Aguilar said. “President Biden personifies the governing philosophy that the House Democrats have talked about for so long, putting people over politics.”

Lieu also applauded Biden’s recent decision to step down from the 2024 presidential race.

“His selfless act this weekend reminds me of what George Washington did when he voluntarily gave up reelection and put country first,” Lieu said.

Lieu later slammed the conservative Presidential Transition Project, also known as Project 2025, during the news briefing.

“In contrast, we have Republicans who want to jam down Trump’s Project 2025 on American people,” Lieu said.

Lieu added that Project 2025 was a “dangerous document.”

Aguilar was asked by a reporter about the U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle’s recently announced resignation .

“Members on both sides of the aisle called for her resignation and I think that was the right decision,” Aguilar said.

Lieu criticized Trump when asked about Biden being unfit to serve in the White House by a reporter.

“But you know who is not fit? Donald Trump,” Lieu said. “He is the oldest person running for U.S. President ever. He makes incoherent statements, he forgets people's names, he mixes people up, his cognitive decline is readily apparent.”

Lieu added that Trump should “pass the torch” in reference to the presidential race.

Aguilar also praised Harris during the news briefing.

“Kamala Harris has been a leader in this administration in so many ways,” Aguilar said. “And efforts by House Republicans to carry the water of Donald Trump are just laughable and unserious.”

Harris recently announced her plans to run for president after Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race, as The Center Square previously reported .

Aguilar expressed confidence in Harris securing the Democratic nomination for President.

“We look forward to securing the nomination,” Aguilar said.
