From the way Rosé sings Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida,” you would think she actually used to rule the world. The Blackpink member premiered her latest cover of the classic record in the Season Two trailer for Pachinko , the drama series returning to Apple TV+ on Aug. 23.

There’s only about a minute of the recording included in the trailer. Most of the clip centers on a family’s fight for survival in 1945 Osaka during World War II. Fitting the tone of the series, Rosé’s rendition of the soaring pop record is darker, its orchestral arrangement just a little more sinister.

Rosé first covered “Viva La Vida” during a live studio session with Løren in 2022. The video of the performance, uploaded that February, has amassed more than 25 million views. “Love this,” Coldplay wrote in response at the time. “What a voice.” Following the release of the Pachinko trailer, an influx of viewers flocked to the upload. A complete version of the updated cover is not yet available.

Rosé made her solo debut outside of Blackpink in 2021. She released two records, “On the Ground” and “Gone,” as part of a project titled R. In 2022, she shared the upbeat pop song “Hard to Love” as a solo within Blackpink, with the track appearing on the group’s second studio album Born Pink .

“It was very challenging — that put me more in a vulnerable position,” Rosé told Rolling Stone in 2022 about venturing out on her own. “The four of us are like one. We’re there for each other, and if one person can’t be in their best condition that day, then we are there to fill in for that other person. Standing alone was frightening. It made me realize how much Blackpink was a big support to me in the past. When I didn’t know what to do, I’d call to ask them what they felt, what their opinions were. So they were always there during my solo work.”
