Yakima Valley Libraries celebrates 80 years with 2024 time capsule

YAKIMA, Wash. -- The Yakima Valley Libraries is celebrating 80 years of service in Yakima County.

YVL said it will be commemorating the milestone by compiling contributions from Yakima County residents for a 2024 Time Capsule.

Yakima County residents are invited to donate items they believe represent 2024 to YVL. YVL said donations could be photos, artwork, figurines, restaurant menus or other materials. Any items that are 3D should be no bigger than a modern cell phone.

Any food and drinks, including empty cans or wrappers will not be accepted.

Residents can drop of donations to their nearest YVL branch through August 5th. The Time Capsule will be opened again in 2044.

There will also be a special 80 year celebration event on August 10 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Yakima Central Library. The event if open to all-ages and is free. This event will also close out the Summer Reading Program and will seal the 2024 Time Capsule.

Some expected events at the celebration include a history presentation, a tour of the Northwest Reading Room, a vintage card catalog activity, crafts and a scavenger hunt. YVL will provide refreshments.
