There was an open question whether Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford would show up to training camp this week.

The Super Bowl winner has been angling for a new contract as he continues to play under a four-year, $160 million deal.

We now have some more information on this courtesy of Rams head coach Sean McVay.

Per multiple reports, McVay told the media on Tuesday that the Rams have indeed worked something out with Stafford and he has reported to training camp. Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic notes that it is not a contract extension. Rather, it’s an adjustment to his current deal.

Stafford signed his current deal back in March of 2022. It runs through the 2026 season. Though, the Rams previously had an out that would have come with a mere $18.5 million dead cap hit following the 2025 campaign. It stands to reason that Stafford received more guarantees on his deal. Details are not yet clear on that end.

First off, it ends any speculation that Stafford would be a holdout from training camp. That’s no small thing with Los Angeles looking to take the next step to conference title contention in 2024.

Secondly, it will likely lead to more of a long-term commitment to Stafford. He had no guaranteed money remaining on his deal after the 2024 season.

At 36 years old, there were previous questions about Stafford’s long-term future in Southern California. That can likely be thrown out the window. At the very least, through the 2026 campaign.

Stafford currently finds himself as the 12th highest-paid quarterback in the NFL on a per-year basis at $40 million. It’s still somewhat below market value. But at the very least, he’s getting more of a commitment from the Rams.
