The NFL has rolled out its first 30 players ranked in their annual Top 100 Players list. Top 100 will be released every weekday from July 22 until August 1, ten players at a time on NFL+ and NFL Network. The top 10 will be released on Friday, August 2.

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has been a mainstay of this list since after he had a breakout rookie season, in which he won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. But this year he has been ranked 75th, the worst ranking of his career.

Just 12 months ago, the NFL gave him the best career ranking, 32nd. In 2022, he was ranked 40th and in 2021 he was 56th.

It will be several days before the full ranking reveals where he falls among the league’s best quarterbacks, Herbert is ranked ahead of only one other signal-caller, Kirk Cousins . His position puts him just ahead of 78.) Kyren Williams , RB, Rams, 77.) Trey Hendrickson , EDGE, Bengals, and 76.) Dre Greenlaw , LB, 49ers.

And he trails 74.) Jessie Bates III, S, Falcons, 73.) Jeffery Simmons , DL, Titans, 72.) Garrett Wilson , WR, Jets and 71.) Laremy Tunsil , OT, Texans.

    Excuses and External Forces

Truth be told, Herbert statistically had the worst year of his career, even when you account for time missed due to injury. But it is hard not to look at the external forces that clearly affected Herbert’s performance last season. Although excuses, as they say, are like armpits; everyone has them and they all stink.

There is a reason the Chargers completely overhauled the front office and coaching staff this year. There were also injuries that once again piled up — Corey Linsley , Mike Williams , and Keenan Allen all missed time. Austin Ekeler also unexpectedly turned into a pumpkin. Poor drafting should be taken into account as well. The Chargers defense was also atrocious, allowing teams to score late points in many games. They lost seven games by three points or fewer, several of those games were to playoff teams.

This will likely go down as a blip on the radar of Justin Herbert ‘s career and he will likely prove to be more important than the seven players listed above.
