USA women's basketball vs Germany: Result, stats and takeaways from Olympics tune-up game

    By Dan Bernstein,

Team USA women's basketball raced out to an early double-digit lead and went on to defeat Germany , 84-57, in Tuesday's friendly game.

The performance put Team USA back on track following its WNBA All-Star Game loss last weekend , setting the group up nicely for the start of the 2024 Olympics .

A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart led the way, picking up the slack with Brittney Griner on the bench and not in uniform. They combined for 34 points and 20 rebounds.

Kahleah Copper: 2 PTS, 2 REB, 2 AST, 6 MIN

Jackie Young: 8 PTS, 1 REB, 2 AST, 12 MIN

    A'ja Wilson dominates

Wilson, the frontrunner for WNBA MVP, registered a double-double before halftime, proving far too much for Germany's frontcourt to handle.

There's little doubt that the Las Vegas Aces star is the best player in the world right now.

    Diana Taurasi given starting nod

At 42 years old, Taurasi made the squad over up-and-coming players such as Arike Ogunbowale and Caitlin Clark, with Reeve appreciating her veteran leadership skills.

On Tuesday, the veteran received the start over fellow guards Kelsey Plum, Sabrina Ionescu, Kahleah Copper and Jewell Loyd. Taurasi gave a lukewarm performance, though, and could face calls for someone else to take her spot. Taurasi finished with just five points on 2-of-5 shooting.

    Brittney Griner sidelined

Griner spoke emotionally this week about how much playing for Team USA meant in the wake of her harrowing detainment in Russia . However, Reeve opted to give the center some rest before the Olympics.

After dealing with a toe injury early in the WNBA season, the Phoenix Mercury player clearly wants to be cautious with her body. She watched her Team USA squadmates from the bench, though, and will likely join the starting lineup for the nation's Olympic opener on July 29 against Japan.

    Sabally sisters in action

Good news for WNBA fans: Satou and Nyara Sabally were healthy enough to play for Germany against Team USA. Satou Sabally , the WNBA's 2023 Most Improved Player with the Dallas Wings, missed the entire first half of the WNBA season because of shoulder surgery.

Nyara Sabally, a post player for the New York Liberty, has been in and out of the lineup with myriad health issues throughout the year.

But both stars were able to compete for Germany on Tuesday and seem to be in line for a full workload in the Paris Olympics. They each eclipsed 20 minutes played against Team USA.
