Journey’s most recent studio album, Freedom, was released in 2022, although the band hasn’t included any songs from the record yet during their current North American co-headlining trek with Def Leppard, dubbed The Summer Stadium Tour. That being said, longtime Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain revealed in a recent interview with Classic Rock magazine that the band may be introducing a brand-new tune to audiences soon.

“[W]e are working on a new, new song, and if we can get that up to speed we may be playing that one,” Cain reported. “We’ll see.”

He noted that the tune, which is called “This Town,” is “[b]rand new, right out of the box.” Cain added, “If it gets accepted then who knows… it might be a single.”

As for the theme of the song, the 74-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer explained, “It’s about the fans. That fifty-year relationship we’ve had with them. We wrote it about their loyalty. The hook is: ‘Tonight, it’s all about this town.’”

Cain also was asked if Journey would consider recording a full-length follow-up to Freedom, which didn’t fare well commercially.

“I don’t know yet,” he replied. “It’s so tough out there. We had hoped for better results with Freedom, even though it was cut-and-paste.” The album was mostly recorded remotely because of the global health crisis at the time.

    About Journey’s 2024 Tour Plans

Journey and Def Leppard kicked of The Summer Stadium Tour on July 6 in St. Louis. The outing, which also features support acts the Steve Miller Band and Cheap Trick on select dates, is plotted out through a September 8 concert in Denver.

The next show is scheduled for July 23 in Philadelphia.

Journey will follow up the summer trek with four shows in Japan in October. The band then will mount a tour of the U.K. and Ireland that runs from an October 30 concert in Cardiff, Wales, through a November 17 performance in London. Cheap Trick will open for Journey at most of the latter series of shows.

Tickets to Journey’s 2024 concerts are available now via various outlets, including StubHub.
