WEST SPRINGFIELD (WWLP)- A recent poll revealed that 1 in 5 Bay Staters envisions themselves leaving Massachusetts for another state within the next five years.

A sizable majority of residents surveyed by the MassINC Polling Group said that they were burdened by high housing costs.

They surveyed over 1,400 residents, and 21 percent of people said they can picture leaving Massachusetts in the next five years.

Another 19 percent said they are looking to move within the state, and 45 percent said they do not plan on moving.

Statewide people are struggling with skyrocketing housing and transportation costs. “I feel sorry for the people that I’m retired and you know so that there’s no pressure on me, but I feel bad for them because I don’t know where the place to go. A lot of people still go to Florida,” said William Kammeraad of West Springfield.

The poll asked residents what they think is the single biggest issue facing the state government. Tied for first at 18 percent were housing and the migrant crisis.
