The Terminator Returns to Comics for 40th Anniversary

It was only a matter of time before Dynamite Entertainment published new comics based on The Terminator . The publisher acquired the franchise license in April 2024 and announced plans to reprint many older comics. Now, Dynamite has confirmed that a new series will be released in October 2024.

Produced in partnership with STUDIOCANAL S.A.S., the new Terminator series will be written by superstar comic creator Declan Shalvey . The artwork will be provided by Luke Sparrow , who recently found fame with his work on the Star Trek comic. Shalvey will also produce one variant cover for the first issue alongside covers by Edwin Galmon, Joshua “Sway” Swaby, David Cousens, and Alex Ross . The Alex Ross cover will be a special “Icon Cover,” reprinting a work Ross created early in his career for the “The Terminator: Burning Earth” mini-series.

New Terminator comic turns all history into a war zone

The previous Terminator films centered around Skynet’s efforts to kill human resistance leader John Conner. However, these plans came to nothing. Despite this, Skynet believes time travel is still the best solution to winning the war against humanity. Consequently, Skynet expands the theater of operations, targeting other pivotal figures essential to stopping the machine uprising. This decision evidently sets the stage for the conflict of The Terminator #1, creating a war fought on multiple fronts across time.

“The approach of this series is new situations, new dilemmas in each issue,” explains Shalvey. The new Terminator comic will be largely composed of “done-in-one” stories based around new characters. However, as the series progresses, there may be some familiar faces from the films.

“We’re going for a more stripped-down, pulpy approach to the book,” notes Shalvey. “As innovative and groundbreaking as the first film was, it was also grounded in its environment, being noirish and moody as hell. An unstoppable force is coming to kill you — that’s the element of the franchise I want to lean into.”

The Terminator #1 will arrive in comic shops everywhere in October 2024.
