In the trailer for the reimagined Western The Thicket , released Tuesday, Peter Dinklage and Juliette Lewis star as ruthless killers. The Elliot Lester-directed film follows bounty hunter Reginald Jones’ (Dinklage) tireless efforts to track down killer Cutthroat Bill (Lewis). After Cutthroat Bill’s gang kidnaps Jack’s (Levon Hawke), sister, the two men pair up.

“You ever shoot a man?” Reginald asks Jack, to which he responds he’s a Christian. “God knows how many this Cutthroat has.”

After Reginald rallies a troop of unsuspecting heroes, including a grave-digging ex-slave and a street-smart woman-for-hire, Jack and Reginald find themselves in The Thicket, a perilous no man’s land.

Lewis told People that the Cutthroat Bill was one of her favorite characters to play.

“She’s seemingly indestructible and has endured brutality and extreme violence,” Lewis said, “but the key to the character for me was her voice, which came instantly when I first read the script. It shows her mangled resilience, deep and gravely.”

Dinklage, who is set to star in Wicked this fall, also shared his excitement to join the Western project in an interview with People .

“The Thicket captures that in the way Joseph Conrad did with Heart of Darkness ,” Dinklage, who is also a producer for the film, said. “What’s down that unknown path? What are the consequences of that journey? And how will you ever return to anything you thought you once were?”

The Thicket, which is based on a novel of the same name by Joe Lansdale, also stars Esmé Creed-Miles ( Hanna ), Macon Blair ( I Care A Lot ), Andrew Schulz ( You People ), Metallica’s James Hetfield , David Midthunder ( On Sacred Ground ), Arliss Howard ( Mank ), Leslie Grace ( In The Heights ), and Gbenga Akinnagbe ( The Old Man).

The film arrives in theaters on Sept. 6.
