(WHTM) — Tuesday’s hometown heroes are setting an example for sustainability.

Employees for the Turnpike Commission use their lunch breaks to tend the garden outside the central administration building near Highspire. They’re growing vegetables in a plot of unused land and harvesting them for a local food pantry.

The Turnpike Commission says the garden exemplifies its goal to become a responsible participant in society.

“So even if you have a small garden and excess amount, get it to your local pantry, make a difference and do as the turnpike does, its can do and we want to reach out to everybody in the community,” Transportation Planning Specialist for the PA Turnpike Pamela Hess said.

Last year the Turnpike Commission garden provided over 1,500 pounds of fresh veggies to those in need.
