Three recent Perquimans County High School graduates are the first recipients of a new scholarship made available to PCHS seniors through the Perquimans County Schools Foundation.

Dakota Mayo, Harlee Hunter and Mary Charles Woodard are the recipients of the first Bear Swamp/Beech Springs Ruritan Club Scholarship.

For more than two decades, the Bear Swamp/Beech Springs Ruritan Club managed a scholarship fund established in memory of Major League Baseball great and hometown hero Jim ‘Catfish’ Hunter. Recently, the Ruritan Club donated $50,000 to establish an endowment to continue the scholarship for local high school students and ensure the perpetuity of the scholarship award.

Applicants must be residents of Perquimans County but may attend either public or private school, including PCHS, the Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies, Albemarle School and Victory Christian School.

Mayo, Hunter and Woodard will each receive a scholarship of $675, which is the total from the endowment’s earnings ($2,025) divided three ways. Each was selected based on academics, character and community service.

According to the schools foundation, Mayo plans to attend East Carolina University to study exercise physiology.

Hunter will attend the University of Mount Olive to study exercise science and minor in sports psychology. She hopes to one day be an athletic trainer.

Woodard will attend Wake Tech Community College, where she plans to enter the pre-dental hygiene program and pursue an associate in applied science degree.
