South Korean vocalist June Yun's compositional debut, Enlightenment -Solid Waves, explores the feelings and emotions elicited by the concepts of light and dark. These things are difficult to describe in words but translate, with her music, into compelling, atmospheric soundscapes full of shadows, apparitions, angelic imagery and mystical moods. Vid Jamnic's resonant vibraphone murkiness lays a backdrop for Yun's emotive clarity of expression on the disc's opener, "Little Mighty Soul." The lyrics are cryptic and bring to mind mid-career Joni Mitchell or early Rickie Lee Jones. Pianist Shai Maestro, who did a remarkable stint in saxophonist Oded Tzur's quartet, injects a succinct delicacy to the proceedings, and guitarist Brad Kang brings in some snap and sting on this marvelously arranged tune.

‘No Postcode’ was commissioned by Mace’s close friend, Victor O’Connor, to be performed at his funeral. It’s the album’s title track and is influenced by the recordings of Frank Zappa and Turkish folk. “The bassline for (the title track) ‘No Postcode’ came first and was in a time signature of three bars of 7/8 and then a bar of 6/8... so 7776. I didn’t know what to call the piece and as the number looked like a postcode, I was hoping it would reveal a place and a story,” Mace explains, “but, the search came up as no postcode!” This piece was played for the first time at Victor’s wake, and despite the fact this song explores the themes of isolation, loss and loneliness - it’s not a sombre listen.

One of the more niche genres in the history of jazz is western swing. Primarily dance music and hugely popular in the Southwest, it originated as a jambalaya blending hot jazz, country, blues, pop and traditional fiddle playing, performed by combos such as the Light Crust Doughboys and Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. It incorporated instrumentation including violins, steel and electric guitars with other instruments. The music was a precursor of rockabilly. Bluer Than Blue superbly resurrects that energetic style by delivering 12 marvelously-performed Western swing-styled tracks—covers and one original—that feature fine vocalist Sweet Megg backed by a terrific cadre of first-class trad players. The result is a joyous romp. "Bluer Than Blue" launches as an up-tempo two-beat with Mike Davis' muted trumped and Ricky Alexander's clarinet before Megg energetically croons, with a slide guitar answering. Justin Poindexter and Chris Scruggs' guitars add swing. Billy Contreras fiddles as all join and burn here.

This festival is primarily known for three things: its long history; the beauty of its settings for music; its mission as a showcase for experimental European jazz. The Südtirol Jazz Festival started in 1982. Despite the fact that its lineups rarely include big-name artists, this annual event is neither small nor unambitious. Whereas most jazz festivals are located in one town and sometimes in one venue, Südtirol spreads itself far beyond its base in Bolzano, Italy. There are concerts all across the South Tyrol region. And while many festivals run for only a few days, Südtirol goes for 10. It is primarily known for three things: its long history; the beauty of its settings for music; its mission as a showcase for experimental European jazz.

Another of those One Man's Jazz where the selections come from various geographical locations around the globe and cover a lot of miles: from the Middle East a pair of tunes from Israeli saxophonist Albert Beger; from the Pacific you'll hear new releases from Japan (a Tokyo club first-meeting jam featuring saxophonist Kenzo Ogino & two from Australia—saxophonist Matthew Ottignon and the band Jiem); Finland's Superposition supplies the Scandinavian vibes, while Germany's well-known reed player Rudi Mahall chips in with his very first all-clarinet The Straight Horn Of Rudi Mahall, and from the nearby Switzerland comes music from reedist Baptiste Stanek; there are several tracks from the USA of course highlighted by the very unusual creation of multi-disciplinary artist Catharine Cary and her children's stories framed in free jazz music by two Montreal players; and finally a contribution of music from Mexico—there is a growing avant-garde scene there—in the form of Sinaptrico Jazz Trio. Parallel Universes is the first album from the MYL trio, the group title incorporating the initials of the members' first names, Austrian violinist and vocalist Mia Zabelka, Japanese pianist and melodica player Yoko Miura, and British signal processing instrument player Lawrence Casserley. All three members have past experience of trio playing; Zabelka's own trio with bass and drums issued Weird Tales and Elegant Motion (Monotype, 2012) but she is probably better known for her membership of Trio Blurb with vocalist Maggie Nicols and guitarist John Russell (1954-2021), the sad death of the latter ending the trio. Of the trios Miura and Casserley have played in, the most relevant here is Sverdrup Balance which included both of them alongside Belgian vocalist Jean-Michel Van Schwouburg and issued three albums between 2019 and 2022. So, MYL trio combines three players who were previously successful in other groups, meaning it is the type of ensemble that would have been labelled a "super group" several decades ago, ELP being a notorious example.
