Sometimes people who appear on Jeopardy! don't have good luck.

And that happened to Tim Herd on Tuesday night. The Ph.D. student went up against Lindsay Denninger, a writer from Smithtown, New York, and the reigning champion Neilesh Vinjamuri, a software engineer from Lionville, Pennsylvania.

From the first round, Tim wasn't doing so great. At the first break, Tim had -$1,600. Viewers at home instantly noticed his struggle and shared their thoughts on social media.

"Rough start for Tim, but it is very early in the game," one fan said on X, formally known as Twitter. "#Jeopardy Tim is in a deep freeze. Poor guy," a second added.

After the first round, Tim was at -$3,600. Fans still wanted the best for him, with one wishing: "I hope Tim can rebound in double jeopardy."

But Double Jeopardy came and went and Tim was still in the negative. At the end of Double Jeopardy, Tim had only got one question right out of the six he answered.

Tim had -$2,400, so he wasn't able to go to the Final Jeopardy round. Though his score wasn't what he wanted it to be, viewers at home shared their sympathies and hopes online.

"Props to Tim for making it to the Alex Trebek Stage. Really wasn't his day, but getting on #Jeopardy is an accomplishment in and of itself," someone wrote.

Another chimed in: "Poor Tim just could not get anything going. He got run over by his opponents who were like buzzer demons. To Tim: at least you tried your best; I hope you had fun on the show. #Jeopardy."

One person saw the positive side of things, noting that Tim would be taking home $2,000 for coming in third. "Tim just banked the easiest two grand of his life," they said.

People even took to Reddit to comment, with one fan there saying: "A rough day for Tim. He looked deeply uncomfortable the whole game."

Meanwhile, Neilesh and Lindsay went on to compete in DFinal Jeopardy, with neither of them getting the correct answer. But Neilesh bet less so he won the game with $11,999 and now has a three day total of $53,099.
