Mike Trout suffers setback early in rehab assignment

Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout began a rehab assignment on Tuesday. Unfortunately for Trout, the Angels and baseball fans, it did not last long.

Trout, who has been out of action since late April while recovering from knee surgery, exited the first game of his rehab assignment just two innings into it.

ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez reported the details on Tuesday night.

“Mike Trout was removed from his first Triple-A rehab game after two innings with soreness in his surgically repaired left knee, the Angels announced,” Gonzalez shared on X (formerly Twitter). “The expectation was that he would return by week’s end. That might no longer be the case, though that part is unclear.”

Trout is one of the most skilled all-around players in Major League Baseball history. He’s a three-time American League MVP, an 11-time All-Star, a nine-time Silver Slugger Award winner, a two-time Hank Aaron Aaron Award winner and was the AL Rookie of the Year in 2012.

But as great as Trout has been on the field, he’s been betrayed by his body a lot, as well. Durability was a big asset for Trout early in his career, as he played in 157 or more games every season from 2013-2016. Since 2017, though, he has never reached 150 games in a season and has only gotten to 140 games once. The last four seasons have been particularly rough, as Trout missed all but 36 games in 2021, played 119 games in 2022 and 82 in 2023.

Before getting hurt in 2024, Trout was hitting .220/.325/.541 but also had 10 home runs and six stolen bases in 29 games. As the Angels are one of only a few teams definitively out of playoff contention, expect them to be cautious with Trout’s rehab assignment going forward.
