WEST PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An update to a story 28/22 news first told you about Monday night: A Luzerne County school district has closed one of its buildings after a suspected mold discovery .

At a school board meeting Tuesday, school officials confirmed that mold was detected in the lower level of the Wyoming Area Intermediate Unit, and the cleanup should not interrupt the start of the school year.

Remediation efforts to get rid of the mold have already started, according to the school’s superintendent.

According to Jon Pollard, Superintendent of the Wyoming Area School District, a survey was conducted last Friday after the district was alerted to a concern of high humidity, moisture, and suspected mold growth on the lower level of the intermediate center. Tests confirmed mold was present.

They also tested the other floors of the building, which came back clear.

JMSI Environmental is treating the problem and attended Tuesday’s meeting for an update to parents and the community.

“There’s no widespread concern. We don’t believe there are any health concerns previously. What we found is really in its infancy and hasn’t developed all that far,” said Jeff Miller with the JMSI Environmental Corp.

The building is closed, and the remediation process will take 12 to 14 days.

The superintendent also tells 28/22 News that at this time, school is anticipated to start on schedule.
