Many Americans enjoy beating the summer heat with a scoop of their favorite ice cream, and the topic of which flavor is the best often leads to an intense debate.
So, what flavor do New Yorkers love the most?
Holiday Calendar conducted a study of the top five most popular ice cream flavors in each state , analyzing the grocery shopping data of over 12 million Americans and surveying 4,500 people across 15 states to supplement the findings.
Favorite ice cream flavor in New York
Holiday Calendar's map shows that New Yorkers love chocolate.
Chocolate ice cream was number one for New York and 14 other states. According to Desert Chill Ice Cream , history shows that chocolate ice cream was created before vanilla in 1775 by an Italian Doctor, Filippo Baldini. In his written work, De Sorbetti , Baldini reportedly recommended chocolate ice cream to remedy medical conditions like gout and scurvy. Though it's unlikely New Yorkers turn to chocolate ice cream as a medical remedy, it's clear it is the flavor they want to enjoy at their favorite ice cream shop.

Top ice cream flavors in the country
According to Holiday Calendar's map, vanilla came out on top in the nationwide average, being the first choice in 19 states, followed by chocolate in 15 states.
While they didn't have a nationwide list, the International Dairy Foods Association supported these findings with its own data, which was released this week.
