    (201) Magazine wins national award. See what made this Bergen County magazine a 'standout'

    Congrats are in order!

    (201) Magazine won first place in the Society for Features Journalism contest in the Best Special Product category for a monthly glossy.

    The judges called (201) “a standout among newspaper special magazines with captivating art direction and layouts.”

    They gave a special shout-out to the Arts issue, saying it was “superb with striking photos and a well-curated round-up of local artists and exhibits.”

    They said the magazines — whose leadership team includes creative director John Flynn , art director Joram Mushinske and editor-in-chief Liz Johnson — were “more than pretty with superb editorial features throughout, singling out They singled out Jim Beckerman's profile of Englewood's longtime resident and superstar Tony Bennett , and Cindy Schweich Handler's "6 Things to Know About" feature on an ESL teacher giving back to her community .

    “The magazine features page after page of gorgeous photos and profile portraits. Of-the-moment features on beauty products, trendy gyms, and houses to drool over round out the editorial," the judges said.

    According to its website, the Society for Features Journalism, which was founded in 1947, "is dedicated to promoting, honoring and celebrating the craft of features journalism — stories that illuminate everyday lives and the rich diversity of our individual experiences."

    Members are editors, writers, videographers, podcasters, photographers, freelancers, designers and student journalists from across the United States and Canada.
