Big Lots, a discount home goods retailer, will shrink in Florida by 11 stores, nearly a third of the 40 that are closing nationwide this year, according to the Ohio-based chain’s filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The company — which sells furnishings, rugs, appliances, patio and gardening goods, household cleaners, groceries and toys — blamed the downturn on several factors.

The struggles include “economic and credit conditions, inflation, the cost of goods, our inability to successfully execute strategic initiatives, competitive pressures, economic pressures on our customers and us, our inability to implement strategic actions and alternatives to improve our performance and liquidity and mitigate the existence of ‘substantial doubt’ regarding our ability to continue as a going concern,” Big Lots wrote in its filing.

Big Lots began in Ohio as Consolidated Stores in December 1967. The company had 1,392 stores in every state except in Hawaii and Alaska as of late April, according to Scrape Hero.
