    Avoid the Folk Festival and check out these alternative weekend events in Newport County

    It's Newport Folk Festival weekend, but let's face it, if you don't have tickets they're hard to come by and you may not want to deal with the crowds at Fort Adams anyway.

    That doesn't mean you have to stay inside the house all weekend, however.

    There are other options for live music or you can doing some shopping at a pair of events. If all else fails head over to a church fair to get your fill of handmade foods.

    Don't run away from the area because of the crowds, just see what's happening and head in the other direction.

    St. Columba’s Concert Series

    St. Columba’s Chapel in Middletown will hold the next concert in The St. Columba’s Concert Series on Sunday featuring the internationally noted pianist Jodie DeSalvo, in an all-Gershwin performance.

    DeSalvo has toured extensively as piano soloist with the orchestras of Chicago, Geneva, Lucerne, San Francisco, Hartford and Chautauqua, as well as frequently with the Naples Philharmonic in Florida, where she makes her winter home. She has also performed over 100 times on National Public Radio. DeSalvo is also a conductor, having built choral programs in several public and private schools, traveling with them on concert tours in Italy, Greece, England, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and France. She is currently starting her 21st season at Artis Naples hosting her very popular series entitled “Piano Talks.”

    This concert will be held in the Chapel’s Parish Hall at 3 p.m. and will be followed by a reception, giving guests an opportunity to meet the artist. Admission for the concert is $20 ($10 for students and children), payable (by cash, check or credit card) at the door. No reservations are required.

    Cultural Survival Bazaar

    Tiverton Four Corners Arts Center, 3852 Main Road, will host the Cultural Survival Bazaar on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

    The Cultural Survival Bazaars are a series of cultural festivals, organized by Indigenous Peoples’ rights organization Cultural Survival , that provide Indigenous artists and artisans, cooperatives, and their representatives from around the world the chance to sell their work directly to the public.

    Each event features traditional and contemporary crafts, artwork, clothing, jewelry, home goods, and accessories from dozens of countries. There will also be live performances and crafts for children.

    The Newport Show

    The Newport Show returns on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. both days at the St. George's School Ice Rink, 375 Purgatory Road, Middletown.

    The not-to-be-missed opportunity for fine art and fashion aficionados serves as the main fundraiser for its two beneficiaries, the Newport Historical Society and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County, and has cumulatively raised more than $3 million since its beginning. Tickets for one day are $15 or $20 for a weekend pass.

    A gala preview party will also be held Friday from 6-9 p.m. at St. George's. Tickets range in price.

    Jesus Saviour Church Summer Bazaar

    The church at 509 Broadway hosts its annual summer bazaar featuring food for purchase, including homemade fava and chourico sandwiches, and children's games from 5 to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

    Free concerts

    Looking for an alternative to the Folk Festival or just a way to catch some more live music?

    Nimfest hosts Barfly and Nate Cozzolino from 3 to 6 p.m. at King Park in Newport. Stu Krous will perform from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Shops at Long Wharf Free Summer Concert Series on Saturday.

    The Digg-It Band will perform Friday from 6-8:30 p.m. at Bulgarmarsh Recreational Area in Tiverton and Jamestown's East Ferry Memorial Square will host the Aftershock Allstar Big Band from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
