Detroit-Style Pizzeria, Electric Pizza Dough Co., Gets Approval For First Florida Store

    2024-07-24

From writing about restaurants for years on Newsbreak, I have learned that some Floridians embrace pizza styles from other regions. For example, articles about Violet Stone, which serves Philly-style pizza, and New York-style Salvatore’s Old Fashion Pizzeria generated much interest. And now, a Detroit-style pizzeria has gotten the green light to begin construction of an eatery inside of the historic San Marco Theatre.

What's Detroit-Style Pizza, Anyway?: While many people know about New York and Chicago-style pizzas, I'd suspect fewer are familiar with Detroit-style pizza. According to All Recipes, this type of pizza is rectangular, chewy, and features a twice-stretched dough. The sauce goes over the brick cheese to give the pizza a unique flavor and appearance.

About Electric Pizza Dough Co.: Chef Tom Gray, who owns eateries Prati Italia and Town Hall, has been planning to bring Electric Pizza Dough Company to Jacksonville since earlier this year. The eatery will serve pizza with handmade, long-fermented dough made in specialty ovens along with seasonal salads, gelato, and sorbet. Additionally, customers can get take-and-bake pizzas and pasta.

The eatery recently submitted permits and received the green light toward a late 2024 opening.

Some patrons of Gray's Prati Italia rave about the Detroit-style pizza in that eatery called the Godfather. A reviewer named Rosalind wrote, in part:

"Each time my family and I visit, it's always for lunch, and we always opt for The Godfather pizza, which never fails to delight with its delicious and flavorful taste..."

About The San Marco Theatre: This historic building was a movie house in the Art Deco style built in Jacksonville in 1938. However, the theater closed its doors in early 2023 as audiences today embrace streaming services.

Although the theater will be getting a new use as a restaurant, it will still be open to the public.
