Home Goods Retailer Conn's Is Closing Over 100 Stores. FL Is Losing The Most

Floridians who are looking for a home goods store need not look far. Chains like TJ Maxx and Ikea are options as are superstores like Walmart and Target. Unfortunately, one home goods retailer that does business in the Sunshine State - Conn's - is not only dealing with bankruptcy speculation, it is also closing stores. And Florida is losing the most.

About Conn's: This is a specialty retailer that offers home goods, appliances, and electronics. The company employs over 4,000 people across 170 stores. There are 21 Conn's locations in Florida.

Some Floridians give Conn's mixed reviews. For example, a Lakeland location earns 1.8 out of 5 stars on Yelp. Some reviewers found the shopping process cumbersome and the waiting excessive. A reviewer named Hunter wrote, in part:

"(I) wanted to stop by the store to see what it's all about. Decided to purchase two items. First, they want you to fill out all your personal information with a salesperson to be able to buy the items. Once purchased you must drive around the store to wait for 15 minutes at a pickup window. They then tried to say it was mandatory that they take a photocopy of my driver's license to be able to pick up my paid-for items."

The Bankruptcy Speculation and Florida Store Closures: In mid-July of 2024, Bloomberg reported that Conn's would be closing stores and is considering bankruptcy. The company is reportedly closing 106 Conn's and Babcock stores.

Florida is losing 18 stores - the most of any other state. Florida will be losing stores in Tampa, Port Richey, Pinellas Park, Bradenton, Ocala, Orlando (three stores,) Altamonte Springs, Orange City, Kissimmee, Daytona Beach, Melbourne, West Palm Beach, Boynton Beach, Hialeah, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, and Jacksonville.
