Ed Corporal, who has coached in The Basketball League since 2019 and is the winningest coach in TBL history, has agreed to a two-year contract to coach the Frederick Flying Cows again, both sides announced Monday.

In the franchise’s debut this past spring, Corporal guided Frederick to a 20-6 record and the Atlantic Northeast Division championship. The Kansas City, Kansas, native pledged to help the team reach greater levels of success.

“I’m excited about returning back to the team to finish what we started to achieve — a TBL Championship,” he said in a text message. “I am committed to the city of Frederick and helping grow the Flying Cows long term. I have made the city of Frederick home permanently! Looking forward to making this organization a major professional franchise powerhouse.”

In a written statement, Frederick general manager Chris Jenkins said there were no other candidates for the position.

“After a successful inaugural season, re-signing Ed Corporal was an absolute no-brainer for the Flying Cows!,” he said. “With a 20-6 overall record, regular-season division title, and most importantly, all the work and appearances the team did in the community, it was clear Coach Corporal is the coach for the job here in Frederick. Coach is a professional on and off the court and has made himself a new home here in Frederick, even recently being inducted into the Key City Rotary. We look forward to the 2025 season under Ed’s leadership.”

Corporal, 61, was known around the Baltimore metro area when he served as an assistant to Meade boys basketball coach Butch Young for the 1999-2000 season and then took over the girls basketball team for the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons. Afterwards, he coached at several high schools and small colleges in and around Kansas City and the Arkansas RimRockers and Arkansas RiverCatz of the American Basketball Association.

In 2013, Corporal was beset by two strokes that left him paralyzed on the left side of his body and required more than a year of physical therapy to regain the ability to walk. He walks with a limp, and his left hand is too weak to grip objects, but Corporal led the Enid Outlaws to the TBL championship in 2021 and has built a 92-34 career record in the TBL.

Corporal’s ties to Maryland are strong as his five children and six grandchildren live in Columbia and Bowie.

“I’m looking to be here for a while,” he said. “If everything works out, I will move into the front office once I decide to move on from coaching and continue to build a championship culture. Thank you to the fans, my players and the organization for making this an awesome opportunity to help grow professional basketball in Frederick.”
