(Atlantic) The Cass County Fair is celebrating its 75th anniversary, and many of you following the Cass County Facebook Page have enjoyed reading about the individuals, families, and business contributors who have contributed over the past 75 years. One of those individuals is Duane Feltz, who served as the Assistant County Extension Director under Dan Merrick from 1959 to 1966. Mr. Feltz, who is 93 years old, still has fond memories of helping the 4H youth and working under Extension Director Dan Merrick.

When asked to recall the fair’s days 65 years ago, Mr. Feltz quickly remembers something he thought was somewhat unusual: the formation of the Cass County 4H Band. He also remembers the year the 4H Pen of Five Beef projects outnumbered the Iowa State Fair.

Feltz also recalled one of the exhibitors, Ed Podolak, who later became a professional football player.

Mr. Feltz remembers the large number of 4H members.

What Feltz enjoyed most about his job was seeing the 4H youth develop from age ten and graduate in the 4H program as young adults. He says they learned many responsibilities through their projects, and the parents were thankful their children were involved in something constructive.

Duane Feltz, a Navy Veteran, went to Iowa State and graduated in Agriculture Education.

The 75th Annual Cass County Fair runs through July 30.
