Critics were divided in their first impressions of Deadpool & Wolverine . Still, it would appear that most of them felt the film warrants a fresh rating because the first full reviews for the upcoming MCU romp have dropped, and they're overwhelmingly positive.
Deadpool & Wolverine sits at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes from 140 reviews, warranting a Certified Fresh rating from critics, including Dexerto's Cameron Frew, who said the film is "giddy, gruesome, and more emotional than you'd expect".
Carla Renata of The Curvy Film Critic says Deadpool & Wolverine is "a relentlessly outrageous blast handled with touching reverence", with Brian Eggert at Deep Focus Review saying that he "laughed harder than [he has] in a long time at some of the jokes".
Despite 80% of critics praising the film, a few negative reviews were scattered among them.
Entertainment Weekly's Jordan Hoffman says, "It has no stakes, no drama, and only the most cynical applications of creativity", and Bilge Ebiri of Vulture says, "it appears to exist solely to make money".
The critiques may be scathing, but the number of positive reviews battling against them drowns out the noise. Marvel fans will surely be excited to see what's in store for them when Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters on July 26.
Deadpool & Wolverine Review Roundup
- CNN.com: Beneath the outlandishness, half-dozen belly laughs and nerd-centric beats resides sweet nostalgia for the last quarter-century of superhero movies, while demonstrating that Marvel Studios possesses the power to laugh at itself.
- ComicBook.com: Deadpool & Wolverine is such a pleasant surprise — both in its jaw-dropping elements and in the sentimental reason for those elements even existing — that it almost feels like a miracle.
- TheWrap: A shameless piece of self-congratulation, fueled by self-cannibalism, as the studio which built its identity on superhero crossovers finally abandons the pretense of trying to justify them dramatically.
- Empire Magazine: From cameos to background Easter eggs to long-fan-ficked meet-ups, it's a relentless onslaught of surprises designed to get audiences screaming and throwing popcorn in the air.
- Deadline: As good as he is, Jackman's return, and wearing that impressive Yellow with Blue suit, is perfection and I would say his strongest turn ever as Wolverine, at least one that gives what he did in Logan a run for its money.
