Raul Malo got his start in music with country band The Mavericks in 1989. In addition to serving as the lead singer, the 58-year-old Miami native co-wrote many of the group’s singles. Since releasing their self-titled debut album in 1990, The Mavericks have scored one GRAMMY Award, two CMA Awards, and three ACM Awards. In late June 2024, Malo shared some sad news with fans as the group gears up for their 2024 tour: He has been diagnosed with cancer. Recently, the “What a Crying Shame” singer took to social media to update fans on his health journey.

Raul Malo Has Completed First Round of Chemotherapy Treatment
Raul Malo started off a July 12 post to the band’s Instagram by thanking fans for sending get-well wishes in light of his diagnosis. “It truly has been touching, to say the least,” wrote the singer-songwriter. “The love that has come my way is giving me the strength I’m going to need for this fight.”
Malo then informed The Mavericks’ followers that he recently completed his first chemotherapy treatment, with promising results. “No side effects, other than a scratchy throat on the first night,” he wrote. “Not all therapy sessions will go this smoothly but we’re off to a good start.”
Fans took to the comments section to show their support for Malo. “If our collective words give you as much comfort as your music has given us over the years, we are honored,” one Instagram user wrote. “Stay strong, take your time to heal, and we will be out there on the road when you are ready.”
The Mavericks Cancel Shows In Light of Lead Singer’s Cancer Diagnosis
In late June, Raul Malo revealed his cancer diagnosis in a video posted to The Mavericks’ social media. He started off by explaining that the band had committed to taking better care of their health during the last couple of years. Part of that includes keeping up with doctors’ appointments.
“And that led to another appointment with a gastrointestinal specialist, which led to a CAT scan,” Malo said. “And that proved to show two cancerous spots.”
Earlier this month, The Mavericks canceled two Colorado shows, rescheduling another for Aug. 25.
