Liverpool braced for Sepp van den Berg interest as Arne Slot faces transfer decision

Liverpool anticipates significant transfer interest in defender Sepp van den Berg. Arne Slot will be left with a decision to make as multiple suitors line up bids .

In the meantime, Van den Berg is likely to play a prominent role in Liverpool's tour of the US. Slot is without Virgil van Dijk , Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez following Euro 2024, meaning the Dutchman is likely to partner Jarell Quansah at the heart of defense until others return.

Those outings could put him further in the shop window. But his loan spell at Mainz last season was already enough to turn a number of heads.

It's believed that Mainz would be keen to take Van den Berg back, but Liverpool looks likely to price the Bundesliga side out of a move. Wolfsburg has also been mentioned.

The latest report from Dutch outlet Eindhovens Dagblad suggests that PSV is moving into position to make a "substantial" offer. It claims that Liverpool would accept $22m (£17m/€20m), although the bid is expected to fall short of those levels.

Meanwhile, yet another Bundesliga side is mentioned, with PSV supposedly facing competition from Stuttgart. It was the surprise runner-up last season behind Bayer Leverkusen, a story that has slipped somewhat under the radar amid Xabi Alonso's unbeaten success.

Whether Liverpool will be able to net its asking price remains to be seen, although the posse of suitors is encouraging in that regard. But one way or another, it seems Slot will be left with a decision to make in terms of whether he wants to cash in on his compatriot.

Van den Berg has reportedly impressed in pre-season training so far. And with many suggesting Liverpool might need to dip into the market for another center-back, the arrival of a promising young option who has just impressed in a top league has the potential to solve the issue in one fell swoop.

But the 22-year-old has been forthright about wanting to leave in order to play regularly. And with Slot unable to offer him the minutes he wants, a lucrative sale could be the best solution — although Liverpool would be wise to protect itself with sell-on and buy-back clauses.

Liverpool.com says: It's a shame that Van den Berg is keen to leave. If he was content playing a squad role, mindful of the expanded Champions League and the likely opportunities it will bring, he would boast a pretty perfect profile.

Maybe pre-season with Slot will soften his stance. But if Liverpool does sell, anything close to the asking price would be a handy boost to the coffers, with Michael Edwards known for such sales in his first spell.
