The Dune actor takes on the role of the iconic folk singer-songwriter, who became a counter-culture force in the 1960s. Chalamet has also said he does his own singing for the role — just like his Dune Part 2 co-star Austin Butler did for his role in Elvis — building on his musical work following his performance in Wonka .

Here’s a first look at the Searchlight Pictures film, which includes Chalamet performing Dylan’s classic “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” amid shots of the singer’s life and career.

The official description: “Set in the influential New York music scene of the early 1960s, follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts — his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation — culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.”

The film also stars Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Dan Fogler as Albert Grossman, P.J. Byrne as Harold Leventhal, Norbert Leo Butz as Alan Lomax, Will Harrison as Bob Neuwirth and Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie.

Mangold ( Ford v Ferrari ) previously explained his motivation for telling Dylan’s story.

“It’s such an amazing time in American culture, and the story of a young, 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with, like, $2 in his pocket and becoming a worldwide sensation within three years — first being embraced into the family of folk music in New York and then, of course, kind of outrunning them at a certain point as his star rises so beyond belief,” Mangold said of the upcoming film. “It’s such an interesting true story and about such an interesting moment in the American scene.”
