In a surprising move, former Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian has revealed that he turned down a contract offer from the Reds this summer to rejoin Real Betis.

The 37-year-old Spaniard, who spent the last several years as a third-choice keeper at Anfield, decided to return to his boyhood club, where he began his professional career.

Speaking to Cadena SER , Adrian explained his decision:

“I’ve always been connected to Betis. I had to leave, but I never really left. It’s true that the option to return became stronger towards the end of the season when we talked more seriously. Liverpool offered me a contract extension, and that’s when the dilemma began. I was very attracted to Betis. It was the best option for me and my sporting career.”

Despite not playing any minutes last season, Adrian felt a strong pull to return to Spain, citing a deep connection with Real Betis. He also mentioned that leaving Liverpool was a tough decision, given his good relationship with manager Jurgen Klopp and the club’s staff.

Liverpool in search for a new goalkeeper

With Adrian’s departure, LFC’s CEO, Michael Edwards, is actively searching for a replacement to ensure the club has three senior goalkeepers. One potential target is Justin Bijlow from Feyenoord, who could step in as a backup to Alisson Becker.

Reports from De Telegraaf suggest that Bijlow could be available for under £20 million ($25.8 million), a significant amount for a third-choice goalkeeper.

However, there are uncertainties surrounding Caoimhin Kelleher’s future at Liverpool, which could make Bijlow a more critical acquisition.

As Liverpool prepares for the new season, the club’s goalkeeping situation remains a key area to keep a watch on.
