Vince Vaughn is getting down and dirty in the Florida Keys as a detective in the Apple TV+ dramedy series “Bad Monkey.” The actor stars in and executive produces the adaptation of Carl Hiaasen’s bestselling novel. Bill Lawrence (“Ted Lasso,” “Shrinking”) also executive produces and serves as showrunner , adding to his Apple TV+ portfolio.

The official synopsis reads: “Andrew Yancy (Vaughn) has been bounced from the Miami Police Department and is now a health inspector in the Keys. But after stumbling upon a case that begins with a human arm fished up by tourists, he realizes that if he can prove murder, he’ll be back in. He just needs to get past a trove of Floridian oddballs and one bad monkey.”

The series co-stars Michelle Monaghan, Jodie Turner-Smith, Alex Moffat, L. Scott Caldwell, Rob Delaney, Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, and Ronald Peet. Zach Braff, John Ortiz, Ashley Nicole Black, and Scott Glenn guest star, along with Charlotte Lawrence who makes her television debut in the series. Marcos Siega (“Dexter,” “The Flight Attendant”) will direct the pilot of “Bad Monkey” and executive produce.

“Bad Monkey” is developed by executive producer and showrunner Lawrence through his Doozer Productions. Lawrence has an overall deal at Warner Bros. Television after both “Ted Lasso” and “Shrinking.” Jeff Ingold, Matt Tarses (“Scrubs”), Marcos Siega, Vaughn, and Liza Katzer are also executive producers.

Outside of WBTV, Lawrence is best known for “Scrubs,” “Spin City,” “Cougar Town,” and “Clone High.” Lawrence recently teased a further “Scrubs” reunion with “Bad Monkey” guest star Braff. The showrunner told Variety that a film version of the hit sitcom is “inevitable.”

“The joke of it with us is the first time that six months go by that we don’t hang out, we’ll end up doing a ‘Scrubs’ reunion,” Lawrence said. “In the greatest way, the cast of that show and the writers are so good that they’re all working. And the main reason to do something like that isn’t the work, it’s because we actually love hanging out.”

Additional Apple TV+ series in 2024 alongside “Bad Monkey” include fellow novel adaptation “Lady in the Lake,” AI-centric series “Sunny,” and “Hollywood Con Queen.”

“Bad Monkey” premieres August 14 on Apple TV+. Check out the trailer below.
