There are very few people who can get a crowd of skeptical beauty editors out of their homes on a Monday night, and Rihanna is certainly one of them. Despite the fact that the launch event for the star’s latest venture, Fenty Hair, didn’t start (!) until 9 p.m., there was a palpable excitement in the air, as a group of editors and influencers gathered in a giant event space in Hollywood a few weeks ago.

Fenty Hair officially launched with a lineup of nine hair care and styling products that are catered towards all different hair types, textures and needs. Of the nine offerings, I decided to test out the hero product, The Comeback Kid, which is a bond building hair treatment said to instantly detangle and strengthen damaged hair.

My First Impressions of The Comeback Kid

The first thing I noticed about the tube was that it has these cute little illustrations on the back that shows how you can use the product as either a leave-in or a wash out treatment, depending on your hair type. I thought this was a fun touch, considering most products have very cut and dry instructions on them.

Next, we’ve got to talk about the scent. It’s described by the brand as a “warm, ambery floral” but I’d add that there’s a sweetness to it that lingers on your hair. Personally, I enjoy a stronger scent in my hair products because I like catching that random whiff of perfumed goodness throughout the day, but if you’re sensitive to scent, I will note that this one packs a punch.

Now onto the texture and application, which were both a pleasant surprise to me. Normally, when it comes to deep hair conditioners and treatments, I expect them to be very thick and heavy on your hair. Also, they usually come in tubs that require scooping out the product with your fingers, which I always found to be a bit messy. Not so with The Comeback Kid.

Not only does it come in an easy-squeeze tube, but it also has a nice consistency to it that reminds me of body lotion. As such, it’s easy to spread evenly onto your hair and I can see why it can be used as a leave in without weighing it down too much, especially if you have drier hair to begin with, like I do. I have thick, coarse waves, so I decided to semi-rinse out the treatment, allowing a trace amount of it to remain on my hair.

The Comeback Kid features Replenicore-5, the brand’s proprietary blend of amino acids, proteins and antioxidants that work together to repair, strengthen, hydrate, smooth and protect damaged hair. Given my recent experimentation with Cherry Blossom highlights and subsequently, very dry ends, my hair definitely needed a comeback.

And comeback it did. Here’s my hair post-wash and style with no other products in it. My hair definitely looks and feels smoother after using the treatment, and it smells delicious.

    Do I Recommend Fenty Hair?

I can only speak to The Comeback Kid, as it’s the only product I’ve tried in the line as of now. That said, I would happily recommend the treatment to anyone who has dry, damaged hair caused by coloring or heat styling. As Rihanna herself says, “I’m telling you if there’s one product you get, it has to be The Comeback Kid.”
