Michael Edwards sticking to guns over Liverpool transfer plans after FSG return

Liverpool remains just one of two Premier League clubs that is yet to sign a single player this summer as the clock ticks down to the start of the new campaign. With less than four weeks to go until the Reds kick-off the 2024-25 season away to Ipswich Town on Saturday, August 17, panic among fans is starting to settle in.

The Reds have seen the likes of Joel Matip and Thiago depart the club this summer, with the latter announcing his retirement following the expiration of his Anfield contract, and no one coming in to replace them - or at least bolster squad options. Perhaps the most surprising part is how this coming season is Arne Slot's first at the helm.

With this in mind, you would expect a new manager to be followed by some new signings as he gets to work on building his own team. Yet none have walked through the door, and it seems as though things have never been quieter since Jurgen Klopp left.

Granted, Euro 2024 and the Copa America have had a big impact on things, with the majority of clubs unwilling or unable to do business with other parties until their players have returned from international duty, but even the lack of noise coming from Anfield has been concerning.

Following the first-team's return to pre-season earlier this month, Slot claimed that he was happy to assess the options already at his disposal before deciding on where he wants to improve the squad. However, 40 days have now passed since the summer transfer window opened, and not one new addition has been made.

Liverpool appears to be biding its time, a transfer strategy favored by former sporting director Michael Edwards , who has returned to the fold after two years away with a new role as Fenway Sports Group's ( FSG ) chief executive of football.

Edwards has always believed in the importance of ignoring outside noise and only signing players when the club feels they are needed, rather than buying for the sake of it. That attitude is holding firm this summer, too, while the Anfield hierarchy has never been one to pay over the odds, either.

The Reds are hardly short on options or lacking in quality, and it's understandable if there is no immediate rush to buy new players. Ultimately, however, Liverpool finished nine points behind Premier League champions Manchester City and that gap needs closing immediately, especially with Arsenal threatening to take their place as City's main title rivals.

There have been links to a number of players but nothing has been concrete, while the club has even ruled itself out of some deals to the frustration of fans. There are still just under six weeks left of the transfer window, which is plenty of time to get business done, but many would have hoped at least some would have happened by now.
