Former Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian San Miguel has admitted that he might not have rejected the offer of a new contract at Anfield had Jurgen Klopp not been leaving.

With the German departing at the end of the season, the Liverpool goalkeeping department has been almost completely changed. Adrian has signed for Real Betis, while John Achterberg and his assistant, Jack Robinson, have also left.

Achterberg has claimed this week that had Claudio Taffarel not been staying, Liverpool might have had a job on its hands to keep Alisson Becker too. Caoimhin Kelleher , meanwhile, has previously suggested he might need to move on to get more regular game time .

"Erasmus has gotten out of hand! It’s usually a year and not 11 seasons," Adrian told Cadena SER . "What 11 seasons. I’ve lived very beautiful and special moments at West Ham and Liverpool. Growth as a person and at a football level.

"I have always been linked to Betis. I had to leave, but I never really left there. It is true that the option becomes stronger at the end of the season when we talk more seriously. Liverpool offered me to extend the contract and that’s where it started the dilemma. I was very attracted to Betis. It was the best option for me and for my sporting career."

Asked whether things would have been different had the manager stayed, he replied: "With Klopp? If I tell you the truth, everything would have been a little complicated. I had a very good relationship with Jurgen and with all the staff. We had a very good group. But the Betis option is always there and when the train passes through there, you have to catch it."

Liverpool.com says: Adrian was a very well-liked member of the Liverpool squad and it made sense for him to be offered a new deal as a result. Ultimately, though, he wanted to return to Spain. Really, it doesn't matter too much. The main thing is that Alisson is staying and ideally, Kelleher will not push too hard for an exit either.
