The NBA legend and Golden State Warriors point guard will make his TV acting debut on Peacock comedy series “Mr. Throwback,” which he also executive produces. The mockumentary follows a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer (Adam Pally) who seeks redemption by reuniting with his sixth-grade basketball teammate (Curry). Pally also executive produces.
“I was excited to step into the world of scripted comedy with ‘Mr. Throwback,’ a story with love for family and friends at its center,” Curry said in a press statement. “I’m looking forward to viewers getting to see me play a version of myself no one has ever seen before, and hope they feel connected to the characters and the dilemmas they face throughout the series.”
“Mr. Throwback” was created by the “Happy Endings” team, including executive producers David Caspe, Matthew Libman, and Daniel Libman. Erick Peyton is executive producing for Unanimous Media; David Wain directs the six-episode series and also executive produces.
“SNL” breakout actress Ego Nwodim and Ayden Mayeri co-star, along with guests Tracy Letts, Layla Scalisi, Tien Tran, and Rich Sommer. “Mr. Throwback” is a Universal Television production.
Curry isn’t quitting his day job just yet — not just as Peacock is about to get into the action. The NBA is returning to NBCUniversal under a new long-term ( and huge ) deal. Disney/ESPN, Amazon Prime Video, and possibly still Warner Bros. Discovery/TNT also have packages of games.
The NBA will certainly not be Peacock’s first foray into live sports. In January, the platform hosted the first-ever streaming-exclusive NFL playoff game, which ended up marking the biggest day of internet usage in U.S. history. And on Friday, the 2024 Summer Olympics will kick off on NBCUniversal platforms — including Peacock — with the opening ceremony from Paris.
Peacock is going all-in on these summer games, streaming more than 5,000 hours of competition . The platform, which was originally supposed to be launched with the 2020 Summer Olympics, has unveiled a multi-view screen home page for the coming international competition with panels labeled as medal events, elimination rounds, first-time Olympians, and “Team USA” events. The Olympics will stream on Peacock from July 26 through August 11 — so long as another pandemic doesn’t upend this one.
