The Batman Cinematic Universe Has a Terrible New Name

2022’s The Batman was a big hit — it’s probably the best Batman film to date, and maybe even the best DC film to date, and fans absolutely loved it. While it’s not part of the DCU, DC’s new answer to the MCU under James Gunn, it is getting expanded into its own standalone universe, and it finally has a very silly name.

According to Matt Reeves, the director of The Batman, and producer Dylan Clark, internally the expanded universe for the film is being called the “Batman Epic Crime Saga.” Thankfully that doesn’t seem to be the official designation, which as of yet seems not to exist, and instead is just a nickname used by Reeves and Clark, but in lieu of an official name, it’s the best we’ve got.

According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly , Reeves and Clark are planning on expanding the Batman Epic Crime Saga quite significantly, starting with The Penguin TV series starring Colin Farrell at his best , reprising his role as Oswald Cobblepot. That series, according to Reeves, will connect to The Batman’s sequel, and from there, more movies and TV shows are planned.

“As we were writing the movie, I was like ‘Hey, you know what? I think there are some cool shows that we could do,’” Reeves said. “It was actually why I wanted to make our deal at Warner Bros.”

Clark added: “We’re looking at this entire world as it relates to who Batman is – the antagonists around them, all the crime that has to be navigated in the city – and trying to figure out where are the areas that are best to explore.”

The Penguin will be released on HBO and Max on September 19, 2024. The series will consist of eight hour-long episodes, and is set almost immediately after The Batman.
