For music fans of a certain age, the name Milli Vanilli is short-hand for fakesters and frauds. Now, the duo is getting their own biopic that details how their immense fame turned to infamy, Girl You Know It’s True . Watch the trailer below.

Directed by Simon Verhoeven, Girl You Know It’s True stars Matthias Schweighöfer, Tijan Njie, and Elan Ben Ali and is set for release via Vertical on August 9th. The flick follows the true story of German dancers Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus, who made up the world-famous duo Milli Vanilli. They skyrocketed to the top of the charts in the late ’80s and ’90s, only for it all to come crashing down when it was revealed that they had been lip-synching the entire time.

A Milli Vanilli movie had previously been stuck in development hell for over a decade . At one point, disgraced director Brett Ratner was even attached to direct. Now, however, Verhoeven has brought the story to life with his own original script — a script he says looks to correct the narrative.

“It not only tells the spectacular rise of two underdogs making it to the zenith of showbiz within one summer, it also gives a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of that illusory world of fame and its sometimes tragic and unscrupulous machinations,” he wrote in a statement. “Personally, I think Rob and Fab did not deserve to become the sole scapegoats of this scandal.”

Following the fiasco, Milli Vanilli attempted an unsuccessful comeback, this time using their own voices. Morvan continued on as a solo artist, and Pilatus passed away of an overdose in 1998. Frank Farian, the producer who encouraged the two to lip-synch, died in January, while John Davis, one of the session vocalists behind many of Milli Vanilli’s hits, died in 2021.

In addition to the biopic, a Milli Vanilli documentary is set to come to Paramount+ in October.
