(The Center Square) – Despite national reports that he has been sent vetting materials about becoming Kamala Harris’ running mate, Gov. J.B. Pritzker says it isn’t so.
President Joe Biden announced Sunday he would not seek reelection and instead endorsed Vice President Harris to be the Democratic Party's nominee.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Pritzker was one of six possible candidates the Harris campaign reached out to this week for the vice presidential spot. The others included Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona.
Pritzker told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program that he wants to continue to travel the country to campaign for the Democratic Party in general.
“It is important to me that we win across the board and all across the United States so I’m going to continue to do that and I’m very interested in making sure that Kamala Harris becomes the next president of the United States,” said Pritzker.
So far, Harris has not said anything publicly about who she is considering, though Democrats have floated at least a dozen names as potential candidates, including Pritzker, who endorsed Harris along with other Illinois Democrats on Monday.
Political insiders believe that Harris will likely go with someone from a key swing state. They include Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Shapiro, Kelly, Cooper and Whitmer. Whitmer told a Michigan television station on Monday she doesn’t plan to leave the state.
If Pritzker did indeed vacate the governor’s office in order to serve as vice president, Lieutenant Gov. Juliana Stratton would take over. The Attorney General and the Secretary of State are next in the line of succession.
