There are words and phrases in the Irish language that can portray a whole range of emotions , from love and fondness, to care and respect.

Irish can also describe things, people, or situations at the opposite end of the spectrum such as anger , sadness, and bitterness. But what about karma ?

Karma is a buzzword that has become popular through pop songs and movie plots, with storylines often based around a sense of retribution among characters who feel others have done them wrong.

Native Irish speakers or budding linguists who are perhaps learning Irish online or attending Pop Up Gaeltachts can now express this sense of feeling as gaeilge with a beautifully crafted phrase: Filleann an feall ar an bhfeallaire.

Pronounced like 'fill-an on fyal err on vyal-er-eh', this translates to 'the treachery returns to the betrayer'. Alanna O'Grady, an Irishwoman on TikTok, shared a whole host of Irish proverbs on the social media platform recently.

This one centring around karma really stood out. The proverbs were across the screen with stunning photos of Irish landscapes - from sandy beaches to rolling fields to cascading mountains - in the background.

It's no wonder, then, that Alanna's followers rushed to heap praise on the proverbs . One woman even said she wanted one of the proverbs tattooed on her. Alanna captioned the sweet video: "I love Irish proverbs so much."
